her name on my arm

about

My grandfather was a quartermaster in the army in Fayetteville,NC. He had all sorts of faded blue India ink tattoos on his arms. He was the inspiration of this song. I imagined this song around a faded woman's name on his arm.

lyrics

it was summer in our hearts
when the wheat was fully grown
saw you standing in the yard
a beauty to behold

i carved your name on my arm
i carved your name

it was winter when we lied
and ran off to elope
played cards that winter long
and wrestled in the snow

and i carved your name in the ice
i carved your name

drove south to alabama
with the ocean in our head
you did not even wait for me
doing cartwheels in the sand

and i carved your name in the white
sand by the light of the moon
we stayed awake that night
just to watch the morning come

this is where i leave you
this is where my story ends
you wanted to know the reason
for the writing on my skin

i carved her name on my arm
i loved her then
